Do you play for the fun of it or serious status in game?

If people enjoy to compare themselves to other players, and therefore want to be 'better' or have shinier stuff, who am I to judge? Who am I to tell them to enjoy the game the way I am enjoying it?
I set my own goals, and don't care what any other thinks of me. But if some player approaches me and flashes his PvP emote in my face, I'll let them have their fun.
If you have problems with people complaining, don't play with them. And don't forget PvP is meant to be competitive, so don't be all fidgety about it when people start cursing at each other. It's part of the atmosphere.

People strive for excellence in everything. Unfortunately, most people getting angry as the OP describes are either awful or douches, or possibly both.
Most players with any status are going to be a lot more constructive about being angry.

Well I enjoy getting titles and getting shiny stuff, it's what makes the fun for me. That and chatting with friends. I nearly never rage, only times I rage is when there's a guy with an IQ of -3 in my group. But I also play for the fun, and usually I don't like the people who take this game as serious as life.

Guildwars is fun for me. I like to meet some new people from all over the world and have some great times with your guildmates. I would love to have some shiny stuff, but im too lazy to farm but meh. But i actually dont care if i have alot of shiny stuff or only a few. As long the game keeps fun and my RL aint suffering from it. Im fine i suppose.

I usually plat for the lolz of it. Making fun is what makes this game as enjoyable now as it was when I just started.
And yes, the "I say I'm pro, but actually I'm not" players are annoying at times. But I've learned to live with it so it doesn't ruin the fun anymore.
And yes, shinies are nice. But you can easily have the same fun without them.

Been playing for nearly 5 years. I own no prestige armour or weapons and have no interest in doing non-game playing titles (drunkard/sweet tooth/lucky etc.) and I find farming really boring.
I play strictly for fun

I understand the question however I don't have any respect for in game gold or titles - it's a game lol.
At this point in the game I'm doing elite areas (mainly with friends) for the fun of like a slot machine it's fun when u get the big drop out of the end chest. However after I get something like an eblade, bds etc... it doesnt make me feel better and I certainly haven't gained any "status". I just lol a bit, accept some gz, put it on a char/hero/slap it in storage and keep playing. In this way I play for fun.
I think the point in titles is personal accomplishment, and that's not something that is shared. I know some of the newer/poorer players kind of look up to the veterans but this isnt status it's just a desire for themselves.
Status in a videogame=nothing. There is no status. Even in pvp we're talking about titles that can be botted so ;P

I play the festival games pretty seriously, and I feel like I'm in pretty good standing with a group of the highscore-level players for RBR and with some of the sync groups for the team arenas. But I choose to do those because they are fun for me, and it maxes out my fun to know that I'm playing with or against other people that enjoy playing the arenas and have become good at it because of that.
Everything general in the game I pretty much only bother with at this point if it has some entertainment value to me, which rarely happens.

Guild Wars is about showing off and impressing others. Anyone who say's otherwise is wrong.
From your armour and minipets, to your weapons and the trim of the cape you wear, Guild Wars has always been, like most other MMO's, a game of showing off.
People can hide behind all the exuses they want, insulting people with GWAMM because they "have no life" when in reality they don't have the patience or the brains to get it themselves.
Or calling others with in game wealth dupers or botters out of pure jealousy. (stares at all the idiots who stand in Kamadan all day insulting others or arguing with eachother.)
But in the end the people with the higher titles and more in game wealth are either doing something right, or are just plain better than all the people who pretend to not care about shinies or e-fame.
Often times I've found that the more experienced players (EXP meaning high titles and/or wealth) are more educated, have a lower tendency to rage, and are genuinely more fun to hang out with. It's the ones who lie and pretend to be pro (the guys with maybe a few sets of obsi armor and 500-1500e, or the gold cape leecher, or the ones with mediocre pvp titles.. r9/g5 etc as an overall generalization) are the ones that you need to watch out for.
GW Is Srs Business. Don't lie.

Used to play and grind for the titles for the status in game. Now it's been a while and everyone has caught up with titles, making it mean less everyday ;-) now i just jump on every now and then for the lolz ;-)

Maybe if one lets him/herself actually be impressed by such things...
...also, there's better places to show off than any ol' dead game.

The main reason why I was attracted to GW is because it is more balanced and has a more interesting combat mechanic than any other RPG I've ever played. Sometimes I farm the "shinnies" or I go after titles that I know I could easily get (like Protector or Vanquishing), but I mostly play for the fun of it. I have one GWAMM, 2 other chars with maxed PvE ranks, and 2 other with near-maxed PvE ranks; but I only play them for the experience, to see if "I can do that with this profession and judge how useful I feel in my party." So I guess I'm taking it as more of a mental game than most people would and I do take it serious, as in I like to do my research and be prepared before I start something, but I don't care for the ugly FoW armors nor the ugly, but rare, weapons.

I play for fun, with people I know, and who know me. Any status is earned between friends, and amongst ourselves is no real biggie.
When it comes to status, there are so many different metrics you could apply.
Most titles, expensive armor or weapons, expensive minipets or tonics, player events run, PVP ranking, and so on and so forth
When it comes down to it, if you're looking to excel in one of those metrics, really all the others are a secondary issue. A title hog may not care who has the the most high level minis. A power trader may not be interested in a gold cape.
What I'm getting at that if you're looking to show off, really the majority of players don't care

It does not matter as long as you enjoy playing the game.

I feel like allot of players forget to enjoy the game because they get too caught up in what other players think of them. I'm not talking about people farming titles for God Walking for their HoM. I guess this is mainly in the PvP zone.
Sure we've all gotten pissed when that war said he was really good but kept running into that mob. But I mean really serious, so serious you give racist comments and all you do is complain.
So whats you guys thoughts around this? Maybe it's okay with a little bit of both? (Serious and non-serious)

Nothing wrong with a competitive attitude in a competitive game.
Games are just about everyone's way to spend there free time if there not playing cod and halo or some or console game or mmorpg, being dedicated to one game is not a bad thing.

for the fun. titles and hard mode completely ruined the game for me because nowadays all my friends ever want to do is farm hm and grind titles. believe it or not, whether you like em or not, titles draws you in. it drew in a lot of my friends and it even drew me in, and i completely utterly despise them. at least nm old school uw/fow gimmicks were more fun then speedclears. especially the book trick, because it was so lulzy you can mostly chit chat with your group the whole way through.
pvp is completely different, and i think its okay to take seriously, i.e. be competitive (but not to the point of raging and being unsportsmanlike, which i've seen quite a bit of).

you can't honestly believe that every single person in this game plays for no other reason but to show off to some people on the internet who they have never, nor will ever meet. and if you honestly believe the whole point to the game is epeen, then you're just downright stupid.
